IP-telephony, also called internet telephony or Voice over IP (abbr: VoIP) is telephony through a computer network based on the internet protocol (IP). There are three different ways of VoIP telefphony: PC to PC (using special software which needs to be installed on both ends), PC to landline (Softphones) and IP-based internal networks (through special providers).
What do you need for VoIP telephony?
Software InterCall V2.1
plus extra module for an additional phone system if you are already using InterCall with a regular phone system
Router e.g. AVM Fritz!Box for up to three telephones
fast DSL connection
separate internet connection for VoIP telephony, the line should not be use for internet access at the same time because this could interfere with the quality of the phone call
inform yourself if your provider also offers VoIP minutes, if you need a provider feel free to contact us
conventional (analog) telephones can be used with VoIP routers
Which are the benefits of VoIP telephony?
The most important benefit is probably that you do not need to pay connection fees for the phones (ISDN). Other than assumed many times VoIP is only free of costs if using a software and a PC to PC connection. As soon as the call goes to a landline (fixed subscriber) or mobile phone costs incurred need to be paid to the provider. But these costs are cheaper using VoIP than using regular ISDN-telephony. The hardware that is used for VoIP telephony (router) is much cheaper than a conventional ISDN phone system.
